3.
After dinner, Leying saw her stepdaughter Yumin looking at herself in the dressing-table mirror and carefully outlining her lips with a pencil. She was going out. Leying didnât like how she went out at night wearing so much jewellery, genuine and fake. The dressing-table was covered with earrings, necklaces, hairbands, brooches and other accessories. Yumin spent so much time and effort on this, it was no wonder she had no time for her studies. Leying shook her head and walked downstairs.
Tianhua was wearing tight jeans and looked like a typical young city boy. As long as he didnât speak, people couldnât tell he was from the country.
Chaojun was allowing Tianhua to stay at the mansion, and the condition that she had to leave her husband to his sexual adventures might be the only option for now, as long as he was discreet and didnât humiliate her. Heâd assured her that he wasnât serious with any of the women, he just wanted to have some fun. The only problem with his taste for younger women was that he showed no interest in her. Leying wasnât forty yet and she had her own desires, especially lying in bed alone. She had trouble falling asleep and hated the long nights.
Tianhua whistled with boredom and paced around the living-room. He kept looking at the stairs. Leying watched Tianhua and she felt proud of her son. He already acted as if he was the young master of the house. Money made all the difference. If sheâd left him at her motherâs tiny place, he wouldnât be so happy.
Yuminâs high heels clattered on the stairs. Wearing heavy makeup, she looked completely different. She nodded at Tianhua and said, âLetâs go.â Leying saw a fawning smile on her sonâs face. So the two had arranged to go out together! Leying watched them walk to the gate, stunned. She tried to catch up, shouting, âTianhua, are you going out?â
âYes,â he replied calmly.
Yumin tilted her head. âIâm going to take Tianhua for a stroll. Donât worry, he wonât get lost. Come on, letâs go.â The two smiled at each other and walked out the front gate.
Leying watched their shadows disappear. She stood like a statue.
âDid you see that?â Yuminâs grandma appeared behind her. âThe kids became close the moment they met, like a real brother and sister. They have a lot to talk about.â
Leying ignored her and ran in a panic to the stairs. At the second floor, she pushed open the door of the balcony. Leaning on the rail, she saw Yumin putting her arm through Tianhuaâs in the dim light down the winding street. He pulled away, but Yumin held his arm again.
âWhat a flirt!â Leying could hardly believe what she saw. She rubbed her eyes and watched her son and her stepdaughter turn the corner.
Yumin stood behind a lamppost clapping and stamping with excitement.
âGet them! More! Teach them a lesson so theyâll never stalk me again, sons of bitches!â Yumin put two fingers in her mouth and whistled.
