3.

After dinner, Leying saw her stepdaughter Yumin looking at herself in the dressing-table mirror and carefully outlining her lips with a pencil. She was going out. Leying didn’t like how she went out at night wearing so much jewellery, genuine and fake. The dressing-table was covered with earrings, necklaces, hairbands, brooches and other accessories. Yumin spent so much time and effort on this, it was no wonder she had no time for her studies. Leying shook her head and walked downstairs.

Tianhua was wearing tight jeans and looked like a typical young city boy. As long as he didn’t speak, people couldn’t tell he was from the country.

Chaojun was allowing Tianhua to stay at the mansion, and the condition that she had to leave her husband to his sexual adventures might be the only option for now, as long as he was discreet and didn’t humiliate her. He’d assured her that he wasn’t serious with any of the women, he just wanted to have some fun. The only problem with his taste for younger women was that he showed no interest in her. Leying wasn’t forty yet and she had her own desires, especially lying in bed alone. She had trouble falling asleep and hated the long nights.

Tianhua whistled with boredom and paced around the living-room. He kept looking at the stairs. Leying watched Tianhua and she felt proud of her son. He already acted as if he was the young master of the house. Money made all the difference. If she’d left him at her mother’s tiny place, he wouldn’t be so happy.

Yumin’s high heels clattered on the stairs. Wearing heavy makeup, she looked completely different. She nodded at Tianhua and said, ‘Let’s go.’ Leying saw a fawning smile on her son’s face. So the two had arranged to go out together! Leying watched them walk to the gate, stunned. She tried to catch up, shouting, ‘Tianhua, are you going out?’

‘Yes,’ he replied calmly.

Yumin tilted her head. ‘I’m going to take Tianhua for a stroll. Don’t worry, he won’t get lost. Come on, let’s go.’ The two smiled at each other and walked out the front gate.

Leying watched their shadows disappear. She stood like a statue.

‘Did you see that?’ Yumin’s grandma appeared behind her. ‘The kids became close the moment they met, like a real brother and sister. They have a lot to talk about.’

Leying ignored her and ran in a panic to the stairs. At the second floor, she pushed open the door of the balcony. Leaning on the rail, she saw Yumin putting her arm through Tianhua’s in the dim light down the winding street. He pulled away, but Yumin held his arm again.

‘What a flirt!’ Leying could hardly believe what she saw. She rubbed her eyes and watched her son and her stepdaughter turn the corner.

Yumin stood behind a lamppost clapping and stamping with excitement.

‘Get them! More! Teach them a lesson so they’ll never stalk me again, sons of bitches!’ Yumin put two fingers in her mouth and whistled.
